How to Prevent the Health Hazards of a Dirty Carpet

Have you ever considered how important carpet deep cleaning is? In a study conducted in the United Kingdom, it was found out that carpets in local residences harbor a big number of different types of bacteria.

Leading the pack are salmonella, shigella, and listeria – harmful microorganisms that can cause a variety of gastrointestinal disorders. The study also showed that the majority of the tested carpets contained campylobacter, a microbe that causes gastroenteritis and stomach ulcers.

Unfortunately, the list doesn’t stop there.

The samples tested also had dust mites, pollen, mold spores, and traces of feces – things you never want to have in any part of your home.

Maintaining a Healthy and Clean Carpet

Keeping your carpet clean all the time helps ensure that your home is free from different types of microorganisms and other substances that can harm you and your family.

Below are some helpful tips that will ensure your carpet is clean and safe enough to have in your home:

1. Vacuum your carpet once a week

Vacuuming your carpet at least once a week will keep it clean and dust-free.

If you don’t vacuum your carpet regularly, you won’t remove small, hidden debris which can potentially damage the carpet fibers, and you end up providing shelter to bacteria, dust mites, and other microorganisms.

Simply running the vacuum once over the carpet, though, won’t cut it.

To ensure you have a clean carpet, go over the carpet several times from different directions using criss-cross patterns and overlapping strokes. Move the vacuum slowly and smoothly to be certain you remove as much dirt and debris as possible.

2. Have your carpet deep-cleaned at least once every 12 to 18 months

If you want your carpet to be free of harmful bacteria, make sure it undergoes deep cleaning every year.

When you invest in professional deep cleaning services, the crew will use a specialized machine to blast out and suction the dirt, grime, and germs trapped in the carpet that a regular vacuum can’t suck out. This will prevent your carpet from harboring bad bacteria which may not only cause a variety of health issues but can multiply and spread as well.

Deep cleaning also offers the advantage of preserving the quality of and removing bad odors from your carpet.

If you prefer to shampoo your carpet on your own, use a high quality, antibacterial, and eco-friendly product. And after shampooing and washing the carpet with water, make sure the carpet dries within 10 to 12 hours. If the carpet is not dry within this period, bacteria and molds may start to settle in and breed.

You can use air blowers to speed up the drying process.

3. Take off your shoes before entering your home

Removing your footwear and asking others, including your guests, to do the same before entering your home will ensure that no one will track in dirt and bacteria from outside. Your carpet will also retain its good condition for a longer period of time when dirt isn’t tracked into the house every day.

Keep in mind that the soil, mud, and dirt clinging to your shoes may also harbor fecal material. This is true even if you are simply working on your lawn. You will bring all these inside your home if you don’t leave your shoes outside.

In addition, place a doormat outside each entry door and another one inside each entry area. This will reduce the amount of dirt, mud, and other debris entering your home. Make sure you sweep the outside entryways often to help prevent the tracking of dirt, dust, pollen, and other debris into your home.

4. Spray the carpet with an antibacterial solution regularly

There are a number of antibacterial carpet cleaner sprays designed to help clean and sanitize carpets. Use them in-between your normal carpet cleaning schedule.

Again, make sure you choose a good quality, eco-friendly product. Pick a spray that can kill airborne pathogens, mold, mildew, and basic allergens.

5. Keep your pets clean all the time

If you have dogs or cats, you need to vacuum more frequently. This is something that you have to do especially if you have kids.

Pets often shed their hair all over the carpet. You need to remove them immediately since this can cause allergies in small children. Vacuuming or sweeping your carpet regularly will keep it dander-free and safe for your kids.

Whether your whole house has wall-to-wall carpeting or not, make sure your carpets are clean and well-maintained. Their cleanliness and good condition have a major impact on you, and your family’s health.
