You may think of your garage as nothing more than a place to keep your car at night or where you keep your lawn mower when its not in use. However, your garage could be at risk for igniting into flames if it is not properly cared for. How can you prevent a fire in your garage?

Properly Store All Flammable Materials

There is a good chance that you have one or more flammable liquids in your garage at any given time. For instance, you may keep motor oil for your lawn mower or vehicle, paint thinner or a can of gasoline nearby in case of a power outage or another emergency situation. To prevent a fire, make sure that all such liquids are properly sealed and kept in a safe place. Sealing containers can prevent fumes from leaking that may be just as flammable as the liquids themselves.

Ensure Adequate Ventilation During Any Work Done in the Garage

During a cold or rainy day, it may be preferable to work on your car or stain your cabinets in the garage. While you may have the urge to keep the doors closed, it could create a lack of ventilation that increases your fire risk. This is because toxic fumes have nowhere to escape, and it could create conditions that may allow spontaneous combustion to occur. This is especially true if you are working with an open flame or otherwise creating sparks in a closed area. Proper ventilation is also important as you need clean air to breathe while you are working in a garage or other tight space.

Sweep Sawdust or Other Wood Shavings Regularly

Sawdust or other small pieces of wood are more likely to catch on fire compared to wooden boards. Therefore, you should make it a point to sweep the garage floor or dust off any other surfaces that may have any wood chips or sawdust on them. Ideally, you will clean up immediately after any work is done in that space. If you have firewood, make sure that it is properly covered and stored far away from any flammable liquids or a space heater. It may be worthwhile to cover the wood with a tarp or even keep it outside if possible.

Get Rid of Waste Liquids Quickly

If you change your car’s oil on your own, store and get rid of waste oil as soon as possible. It may be possible to have it recycled at a local home improvement store or arrange for pickup as part of your weekly garbage service. The same goes for any car batteries or any other battery that has reached the end of its useful life. This ensures that there aren’t any fluids that leak or seep through the battery case and increase the risk of a fire starting.

Cleaning and organizing your garage on a regular basis can play a role in keeping the rest of your home clean and safe from a fire. Fortunately, it only takes a few minutes to sweep away sawdust or properly store and organize hazardous liquids when you are not using them to ensure they don’t ignite without warning.
