Your living room not only makes for your family’s common shared space but also creates the first impression of your home on guests. This space is all about having conversations, watching television and reading.

Serving multiple prime functions, a living room can be the hardest to design. Whether you want a complete revamp or just quick fixes, you’d certainly expect the new design to make daily living slightly easier and also beautify the family’s most-liked room.

Here are six smart tips for designing your living room:

1.Make a statement ceiling – How about beginning your project with the most forgotten part of any room? Yes, your ceiling, the fifth wall would usually be the last item on your mind when decorating, however, the design is sure to transform your living room.

Give your ceiling a complete makeover by adding a pattern to it. Apply a fresh coat of paint to the ceiling, or wallpaper it, or even fix a striking tile mosaic to it.

Painting the ceiling in dark colors gives an intimate feel to a small living room, particularly when combined with low-hanging white-colored paper lanterns.

Dark-colored ceilings give big spaces definition, flaunting extravagant features like crystal chandeliers and hand-woven carpets. Similarly, painting the ceiling all white gives your living room a classic look, drawing attention to wall and ceiling decorations.

2.Use your wall space creatively  – Add life to the walls by using them to display art pieces or your favorite collections. Group similar artworks and hang them sufficiently low so that they connect with nearby furniture items.

Creating an aesthetically pleasing gallery wall of family pictures gives a personal touch to your living room. Use similar-styled photo frames of different sizes and you can also opt to display only black-and-white photographs.

Wall sconces are one of the coolest ways of decorating your walls. Besides beautifying the walls, they also save space that you’d otherwise need for keeping table lamps. Make use of extension cords to improve wall lighting.

3.Do up your floor wisely – Choose such flooring for your living room that exudes design and gives comfort underfoot as well. Also, make sure that the flooring style goes well with the living room furniture and art decor.

For instance, you can go for a solid hardwood floor in beige or ivory color, drawing attention to the various furnishings and showpieces. You can use area rugs under some of the furniture, thus covering parts of the floor.

How about illuminating a dark corner of the floor with a well-placed  LED floor lamp? You might want to keep a reading chair in one of the corners of your living room and place the floor lamp next to it or use the lamp to highlight a beautiful piece of sculpture placed in a corner.

4.Make your living room look roomy and inviting – Make sure that your guests or visitors have plenty of space to enter the living room. For keeping ample clearance at the entryway or the front door, refrain from placing any furnishings extremely close to it. Also, make certain that the rug edges are far from the entrance so that your guests won’t trip.

Organize your furniture in a way that guests have sufficient space to move within the living room. You can also increase your seating room’s visual space by hanging a mirror on one of its walls. Mirrors help open the room up if it has lesser windows than required.

Consider designing your living room around a centerpiece like a fireplace or the television. Your best bet would be to pair these two focal points up, with one representing home and the other, a modern mental escape. You can also use stunning artwork as your seating room’s focal point.

5.Design proportionately –  Select furniture that fits well into your living room, and also choose the right colors. For instance, don’t cram large, dark-colored furniture into a small space. Also, stick to light colors for the walls and floor. Don’t keep a tall cabinet in your seating room if it has a low ceiling.

If you have a large seating room, think of elaboration such as sprucing up the windows. Use fabric generously and combine relaxed blinds with floor-to-ceiling curtains to convey luxury.

In a large space, maintain a distance of 3 feet between the furnishings for a warm and inviting feel. For decor, you could go for a large vase or similar, small-sized art pieces grouped.

6.Add greenery – Use indoor plants in your seating room. Indoor plants can survive with negligible or even no sunlight. They not only help to adorn the room but also provide fresh air and greenery to your home. This way the living room becomes all the more inviting.

Get creative with the plant arrangement. You can set a tropical theme for the room by filling it with the plants and stickers of them. Alternatively, you can place a single large potted plant adjacent to the sofa.

Hanging plants or plants arranged on shelves also enhance the room’s decor. Make sure to use indoor plants like ferns and succulents since they need minimal care.

Conclusion

Now you should be able to design your living room without much difficulty. So, begin right away and make it look timeless!
